Aaron Douglas (1899–1979) was a leading member of the Harlem Renaissance, and the work Aspiration, 1936, oil on canvas, was the fourth and final panel in a series that showcased African American contributions to national life, from the forced labor of slavery to the intellectual acumen of contemporary professionals in the arts and sciences.
