“I remember loving Helene Schjerfbeck’s work since I was a teenager. I think it was my grandmother who introduced her to me. My grandmother was a very curious person and always interested in arts and culture.”
To create this painterly piece, Metsola revisited her favourite books on Helene Schjerfbeck and drew inspiration both from Schjerbeck’s work and life as well as her own.
Metsola creates vibrant paintings, patterns and illustrations using a combination of materials and techniques from watercolour to ink, markers and gouache. Drawing and painting enthusiastically from a young age, she instinctively creates evocative works inspired by her environment. Painting is a particularly important process for her as she enjoys working intuitively and organically by hand.
This print is among a group of three works celebrating Finnish artists. Other works by Kustaa Saksi and Karoliina Hellberg are also available.
The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.
