“Schjerfbeck was so versatile, the self-portraits and landscapes come to mind very quickly when thinking of her work, but I also find her still lifes extremely sensitive and beautiful.”
Hellberg employs her distinctive detailed and layered approach to this newly imagined interior. A selection of literal references to Schjerbeck’s works which Hellberg finds most personally meaningful, can be found throughout the composition.
Attention to detail, versatile painting and printing techniques and a skilled use of colour are strong qualities of Hellberg’s work. Her interiors contain a combination of real, remembered and imagined spaces with countless details. People hardly ever feature in her works, but Hellberg’s interiors feel inhabited.
This print is among a group of three works celebrating Finnish artists. Other works by Kustaa Saksi and Aino-Maija Metsola are also available.
The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.
