Cannibalised Portrait Black and Green

Clifton Wright has pursued portraiture for over a decade, working in response to family albums, newspaper and magazine pictures, documentation of exhibitions, characters from science fiction and popular culture. From the beginning, the faces in his drawings have been woven into and enmeshed with tessellations of abstract shapes. The shadows playing across the face become independent and find echoes in negative space.

“The face is the most important part of the body, if you get the face right the rest will pretty much follow. It is the shapes in the face and the colours in the face that tell me what the drawing is going to be. My work is more about that abstract stuff than who the person is – a face is the starting point, but the point is the picture. I use the structure of how things slot in to the face, and continue it, like a jigsaw puzzle, across the rest of the picture.”

Produced as an edition of 7, Cannibalised Portrait Black and Green, 2019 is a four colour linocut print. Available as part of our exciting new project with Intoart.

Product story

Intoart’s vision is for people with learning disabilities to be visible, equal and established artists. Their artistic programme creates opportunities for production, leadership and audience engagement. We are delighted to be working together to support this mission.

The Art studio is the main focus of Intoart’s activity and a space for making, learning and sharing ideas. The studio programme runs every weekday. Activity ranges from our Art Foundation programme where people experience Intoart for the first time through to artists developing ambitious bodies of artwork to exhibit as solo artists.
