This display by Clare Woods RA brings together a group of prints of still life. Originating in the early phases of the 2020 lockdown, as the outside grew less recognisable, Woods’ experience of her home shifted and catalysed a reseeing of the objects housed inside.
Woods’ practice has long been concerned with vulnerability and fragility, and the prints capture how these themes manifest in the odd silence of a domestic space. Works like Between Before and After are unmistakably rooted in real space and time, but are abstracted by bold, fluid marks. It is through the materiality of printmaking that Woods achieves a simultaneous de/re construction of form.
On show in the Belle Shenkman Bar until 24 March 2024.

"Screenprinting by its nature lends itself to a harder-edged, more graphic image. I chose this technique in an attempt to create a tension between the subject matter and the process. I wanted to see how a far I could deconstruct, then reconstruct the layers of the image."
