Emma Stibbon RA has recorded some of the world’s most transient landscapes, from the decaying architecture of East Berlin to Iceland’s volcanic terrain. Her work often explores the impact of natural forces: the shifting tectonic plates, volcanic activity and powerful glaciers that shape and transform the Earth’s surface.
This richly tonal intaglio etching is produced as an edition of 25, each signed and numbered by the artist.

“The polar regions are remote and disorientating landscapes where scale and distance confound the eye. Passing through this strange, ethereal light certainly felt like one was travelling into an internal world. I wanted the work to reflect a feeling of reverie or introspection.”
On an artist placement aboard HMS Protector, Stibbon documented the vast yet delicate environment of the Antarctic in varying media. In contrast to the sophisticated digital technologies employed by the Royal Navy, Stibbon used brush and ink to draw swiftly from observation. She believes that the human, tactile response still has an important role in communicating about environments undergoing dynamic change.
The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.
Emma Stibbon has made a number of prints inspired by her travels in the Antarctic Peninsula with the Scott Polar Research Institute and the Royal Navy. In these richly tonal etchings, the artist explores ‘urgent environmental concerns’ through the depiction of the glacial retreat and the slow but steady movement of melting ice across foreboding expanses of dark water.
All proceeds from sales of this work go directly to support the non-profit-making areas of the Royal Academy, particularly the RA Schools.

Emma Stibbon RA was born in Germany (1962). She studied at Goldsmiths College, London, and the University of the West of England, Bristol.
