Humphrey Ocean has made many drawings, paintings and prints of chairs that can be interpreted as a form of portrait. The particular shape of a high-backed armchair appears in his work in numerous forms. This is one of a pair of new prints which continue that interest; the woven cloth represented on many of his chairs depicts a kind of fiction of forests and the Englishman’s castle. As Ocean himself says, ‘Mine have a slightly different starting point.’
All proceeds from the sale of RA Editions prints go directly to support the RA Schools.”
Ocean is very much a convert to print. In 2003 the artist began work on his first small box-set of aquatints, based on his Dot Book drawings and his larger Love Chair etchings. Today, the medium is one of his favourite forms of expression.
The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.

Humphrey Ocean studied at Canterbury College of Art from 1970 to 1973. During that time, he played bass with Kilburn and the Highroads and the band supported The Who on their 1973 Christmas Tour.
