Morris made this limited edition here at the Royal Academy Schools, in collaboration with Hen Coleman.
All proceeds from the sale of RA Editions prints go directly to support the RA Schools.
"Printing is totally different from painting, and I have found this contrast useful to think about. I imagined it to be like painting back to front, or inside out, and with less freedom to play. Instead it has brought other, unexpected, possibilities.
The crucial moment was when I asked for a second red over the top right rectangle. I had planned for further stages, more shapes, but that move suddenly opened up the space and everything clicked into place, so I decided it was finished"
The concentrated composition of the piece engages the viewer in the contemplation of pure abstraction, in which colour relationships create luminosity, and set up rhythms and layers across the page.
The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.
About Mali Morris RA
Mali Morris RA was born in North Wales and studied Fine Art at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, BA from 1963 - 68 and the University of Reading, MFA from 1968 - 1970.
