From designated World Heritage Site St Kilda to the uninhabited Isle of Staffa, this display charts Royal Academician Norman Ackroyd’s numerous journeys to the Hebrides. Immersing himself in the landscape, the artist uses his plein-air studies, often produced under tempestuous coastal conditions, as a foundation to his dramatic etchings.
The Hebrides is an archipelago comprising hundreds of islands in the Atlantic Ocean off the northwest of the British Isles. Over the past 100 years, many have been abandoned and allowed to go feral, but traces of deserted villages and early Christian chapels are still prominent.
On show in the Belle Shenkman Room from 8 February 2022.

"The pins on the map represent places I’ve been to and produced work. When I go on trips I charter a boat, I love to circumnavigate the islands. What interests me is when people have lived there – I like those traces of habitation"
