Product story

Through sculpture, painting, photography, film and performance, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA’s practice explores issues of race and class, questioning the meaning of cultural and national identities.

The aerial photograph of the Royal Academy courtyard captures a quintessential British scene; a crowd queuing in the rain to enter a Turner retrospective. In Shonibare's characteristic reimagining of subject, and emphasised through the minimalist reduction of the print, the colourful umbrellas of the crowd are abstracted to create a magical, almost surreal spectacle. Playfully interspersed are puddles of slick varnish mimicking the rain and unique pieces of Dutch wax batik fabric, a signature of the artist and now synonymous with his work.

Printed by Coriander Studio.
