Product story

"I have often thought that if a tree could talk it would have multiple tales to tell. They have hearts, limbs and crowns after all."

The personification of trees is at the heart of Stephen Chambers' series The Talking Trees of England. Chambers’ subjects are knowing and mischievous; they provide shelter, or a place to hide, and represent longevity and the great tradition of the English countryside.

The RA Editions programme generates valuable revenue for the RA and in particular the RA Schools.

Printmaking has always been central to Stephen Chambers’ artistic output. Using a distinctive visual language he depicts enigmatic characters often inspired by those who reside in the pages of fiction or from various eras of history. Three Naughty Girls, 2018, is one of his new series, The Talking Trees of England, which includes four small-scale prints that explore the personification of trees. They were produced at Nutmeg Studios in south east London. Chambers’ trees are knowing and mischievous; they provide shelter, or a place to hide, and represent longevity and the great tradition of the English countryside. In the artist’s own words, ‘I have often thought that if a tree could talk it would have multiple tales to tell. They have hearts, limbs and crowns after all.’

All proceeds from sales of this work go directly to support the non-profit-making areas of the Royal Academy, particularly the RA Schools
