The Royal Academy held a major retrospective, Joe Tilson: Pop to Present, in 2002 celebrating the decades of printmaking by Senior Academician Joe Tilson.
Defying the conventions of traditional printmaking practice, Tilson’s unique visual language continues to draw on his early experiences as a carpenter.
Born in London in 1928, he has taught at St Martin’s School of Art; Slade School of Fine Art; University College London; The School of Visual Arts, New York and the Hochschule fur Bildende Kunste, Hamburg.
Elected Royal Academician in 1991, Joe Tilson now divides his time between London and Italy and continues to work with passion and energy as he approaches his 90th birthday in August 2018.
