This work continues Scottish artist Macphee’s fascination with the humpback whale and the species’ seemingly endless journeying which she has observed on whale-watching trips. Initially inspired by depictions of whales by David Blackwood, Macphee works directly onto large sheets of copper after making preparatory drawings. She builds up several layers of ink during the printing process which helps to create the distinctive scarred marks found on a whale’s skin. Humpbacks are known to travel in a straight line for thousands of miles during migration by using the sun, the stars and Earth’s magnetism as a compass.
