Artwork description

Leonard McComb (1930–2018) always loved to work from life. Much of his subject matter was inspired by what he saw during his extensive travels, especially in Cyprus and the South of France. His work was led and informed by the close relationships he forged over time, be they with friends made while abroad or among the market traders of Billingsgate, London.

McComb generally stayed with his sister over the Christmas period. During these visits his work would occupy the attention of the entire household. The family would provide him with subject matter for his paintings, including fish, flowers and fruit from the local markets. The kind of velvety dark background he uses in this painting features in a small number of McComb’s still lifes and provides a dramatic foil for his subject.

‘Everything I make is a portrait, whether I paint a human head, a flower, or an object on a table.’ Leonard McComb RA, 2004
