Artwork description

Leonard McComb (1930–2018) always loved to work from life. Much of his subject matter was inspired by what he saw during his extensive travels, especially in Cyprus and the South of France. His work was led and informed by the close relationships he forged over time, be they with friends made while abroad or among the market traders of Billingsgate, London.

Although McComb enjoyed working in sun-drenched natural light, he also occasionally worked by night. These orange trees were drawn with pen and ink by moonlight during a working excursion in Cyprus over the Christmas period of 2005.

‘Everything I make is a portrait, whether I paint a human head, a flower, or an object on a table.’ Leonard McComb RA, 2004
