Artwork description

Leonard McComb (1930–2018) always loved to work from life. Much of his subject matter was inspired by what he saw during his extensive travels, especially in Cyprus and the South of France. His work was led and informed by the close relationships he forged over time, be they with friends made while abroad or among the market traders of Billingsgate, London. 

McComb compared the bending and twisting of tulip stalks to ballerinas dancing. In this painting, as in a small number of his other still lifes, McComb creates a dramatic foil for his subject by contrasting the tulips against a velvety dark background.

About Leonard McComb RA

Leonard McComb RA was born in Glasgow in 1930. He studied at Manchester School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art, London.

McComb recieved a multitude of awards, including the Royal Academy's Jubille Award (1977), The Times Watercolour Prize (1992 and 1993) and the RWS Prize (1998). He also undertook major commissions such as the Jubille Medal for the... Go to artist page
