One of twelve children, Arthur Rackham showed great talent for drawing at a very young age and became a full time artist at the age of 25. He studied at Lambeth School of Art whilst also working as a clerk at Westminster Fire Office. He soon established his reputation as one of the leading illustrators from the golden age of British book illustration with his fantastical depictions of fairytales and believed in ‘the greatest stimulating and educative power of imaginative, fantastic and playful pictures and writings for children in their most impressionable years’. Primarily known for his watercolour illustrations he also produced illustrations for publications and newspapers, woodcut engravings and once designed costumes, scenery and drop curtains for a production of Hansel & Gretel.
