Product story

Senior Academician Fred Cuming RA’s work is characterised by his exploration of dramatic light and shadow within the natural landscape. Much of his work celebrates Southern English coastlines including the sea and skies of Hastings and Rye often illuminated by dawn, dusk or glowing moonlight. However, Cuming also paints with an imaginative breadth that has taken his practice further afield to the natural and urban landscapes of Italy and beyond. Reflecting upon the presence of man and society within the nature, Cuming continues to work with passion and energy into his 80s and has produced a number of new paintings for this exhibition that are being shown for the first time.

Eruptions of the active volcano of Etna on the East Coast of Sicily have historically been the subject of poetic and artistic impressions, dating back to Virgil. Cuming adds to this tradition with an Etna casting a brooding presence, steam rolling from its fumarole.

One of a small number of limited edition prints available in the exhibition, oil-based ink has been used here to re-create the rich and dramatic palette which characterises Cuming’s paintings. This work was printed at Advanced Graphics London.
