Artwork description

Best known for his etchings celebrating the dramatic coastline of the British Isles, this print is evidence of the diversity within Ackroyd’s practice as a printmaker. Characterised by atmospheric skies and turbulent seas, Ackroyd’s etchings are often begun during boat trips where he works from life, sketching directly onto a copper plate.

In 2002, Ackroyd was asked by the Royal Warrant Holders Association to visit the Balmoral Estate on Deeside. He produced several etchings and watercolours of the spectacular Loch Muick and the surrounding mountains. His visit coincided with the death of the Queen Mother, which accounts for the flag above the castle flying at half-mast.
