Joffe’s practice explores the genre of portraiture taking found images from magazines and family photographs as subject matter as well as working from life, painting herself, her children and friends. Often oversize in scale, her impactful and uncompromising paintings are characterised by her deceptively casual handling of the medium, dripping thinner colour over thicker blocks of paint. Frequently confronting the viewer, Joffe’s (almost always female) subjects are a seductive, confident presence with an edge of vulnerability. This pencil drawing is a study of the artist Ishbel Myerscough’s daughter Bella. It can be viewed as a pair with ‘Bella’ by Myerscough, also featured in the ‘Only Connect’ exhibition. Myerscough and Joffe have been close friends since studying together at Glasgow School of Art.
Artist Sales: this work is sold by the artist. The sale is facilitated by RA Enterprises (RAE) for which RAE receives a commission from the artist only.
