Produced exclusively for the RA Shop in collaboration with Stephen Chambers RA and Christopher Farr, this rug features Chambers' artwork Birds of Extinction, 2025.
Limited to 20 editions, each rug is handmade from 100% wool and produced in India according to Care & Fair ethical standards.
Stephen Chambers RA is a British artist known for complex paintings that hover between abstract and figurative, minimal and decorative, and are intended to evoke curiosity in the viewer.
Speaking on his limited edition rug, he says: "I forever enjoy the navigation through pattern. The contemplative mazes found secreted in 15C churches, the unchartered track of a raindrop navigating down a windscreen, the worn footpath across a broad field…
Carpets need to operate from all angles; to engage from whichever way you approach. This is, needless to say, particularly problematic where imagery is involved. In this image, originally a painting, the identifiable elements, the birds, are hidden amongst the foliage, and more importantly the serpentine, unidentified, ribbon that snakes across the entirety.
Much as the labyrinth greets you in many a quattrocento church; an invitation to slow down and contemplate, as your eyes trace the twisting path, I envisaged this meandering pink thread doing the same.
I am often asked what the pink line is. It has been suggested that it’s a worm (mmmm, well, if you want…). The answer is that it is a journey."
Christopher Farr prides itself on using only the very best available yarn, dyes and weavers to produce the finest rugs and textiles. The company actively supports Care & Fair, an organisation based in India dedicated to the elimination of child labour in the rug industry and the education of children in weaving areas.
