Brian Wildsmith was born in Yorkshire in 1930. After becoming a freelance artist his books were taken up bu Oxford University Press. He has received the Kate Greenaway Medal three times, for Brian Wildsmith's ABC, 1962, Birds, 1967 and The Owl and the Woodpecker, 1971.
