by Yinka Shonibare RA
Kaleidoscope by Yinka Shonibare CBE RA playfully reclaims an object from a familiar British tradition and subverts it through the transformation of the shape into a phallus and the 'peep show' within.
Wrapped in one of the artist's signature Dutch wax batik patterns, the opening at the head of the phallus reveals a re-imagining of Boticelli's The Birth of Venus. Replacing the familiar image of the ideal female nude with a photograph of a naked male, Shonibare seeks to question the male gaze by performing an act of reverse objectification.
Produced in a limited edition of 45, signed and numbered by the artist.
