The Voice of the Shuttle (Philomela) is a new limited edition print produced by Jenny Saville RA exclusively for the Academy. This work takes its title from Saville's drawing on canvas of the same name shown in La Peregrina, Saville’s curated gallery within the RA' Rubens and His Legacy exhibition.
The myth of Philomela has inspired many creative minds through the ages of Ovid, Shakespeare and T.S. Eliot. Philomela is believed to have been the princess of Athens within Greek Mythology. After being violently raped by her sister's husband, she takes revenge and is transformed into a nightingale, a bird renowned for its sorrowful-sounding song.
Saville is best known for her large-scale oil paintings of female figures; focusing on flesh, extremities of anatomy and the grotesque. This very special limited edition provides a lasting legacy of Saville’s close association with the Rubens exhibition. Read more on Jenny Saville's response to Rubens and the myth of Philomela.
