Product story
Best known for his etchings celebrating the dramatic coastline of the British Isles, this print by Norman Ackroyd is evidence of the diversity of his practice as a printmaker. Characterised by atmospheric skies and turbulent seas, Ackroyd’s etchings are often begun during boat trips where he works from life, sketching directly onto a copper plate.
In Ackroyd’s words, ‘The ancient market town of Thirsk sits in the heart of the fertile Vale of York. The architect John Carr of York, who built Harewood House and the stables at Castle Howard, extended Thirsk Hall in the late eighteenth century, adding an extra floor and two imposing wings. The extensive gardens and parkland behind the house still contain many of the original eighteenth-century trees, brick enclosures and greenhouses. The fourteenth-century St Mary’s Church adjacent to the house is almost cathedral size and largely unspoiled. It dominates the landscape for miles around.’
About Norman Ackroyd RA
Norman Ackroyd RA studied at Leeds College of Art from 1956 to 1961 and London’s Royal College of Art from 1961 to 1964.
