This stunning silk scarf has been printed with a plate from Principles of the science of colour, concisely stated to aid and promote their useful application in the decorative arts by William Benson.

Titled Coloured Plate representing sections at right angles with the primary axes of the cube, the work shows nine 3 x 3 arrangements of circles in harmonious colours – including blues and greens, pinks, orange and yellows in both pastel shades and more jewel-like tones - some of which have been embellished with embroidery.

Product story

William Benson (fl. c. 1868-71) was an architect and writer on the theory and application of colour in the applied arts.

The RA Collection holds a copy of Principles of the science of colour, concisely stated to aid and promote their useful application in the decorative arts which was presented to the Royal Academy of Arts by the author in 1869. The front pastedown carries a 20th century Royal Academy bookplate and ‘Presented to the Library of the Royal Academy, by the author. William Benson, 22nd Feb 1869’ is inscribed in ink on the title page.
