Artwork description

We are proud to present this screenprint by Craigie Aitchison (1926–2009). Often working on a smaller scale than many of his contemporaries, there was a softness of touch to Aitchison’s distinctive visual language, and a certain naivety. However, his lifelong fascination with the crucifixion dominated many of his works, lending them a weighty tone despite his joyful palette. Aitchison used his beloved Bedlington Terriers as well as other animals as subject matter, and was inspired by the landscape of Italy where he lived on and off throughout his life. He taught at Chelsea College of Arts in the 1970s and 80s with John Hoyland, Allen Jones, Patrick Caulfield, and Stephen Farthing. This work is printed and published by Advanced Graphics London using oil-based inks that result in vibrant colour and a richness of surface.
