Product story

This prismatic umbrella is printed with possibly the first illustration of the colour spectrum presented in the form of a wheel, and part of the history of the Royal Academy.

This hand-coloured etching of a ‘Prismatic’ appears in The Natural System of Colour by Moses Harris (1733-1780), presented by William Etty RA to Sir Joshua Reynolds as first President of the RA. The book was intended to be of practical use to artists and reflects the fundamental mission of the Royal Academy, both then and today. This extremely rare first edition is now held in the RA Library.
