Leonard McComb studied at Manchester School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art before going on to teach at various art schools. His first solo show was held in 1977 and since then he has exhibited widely and his work is held in private and public collections throughout the UK, Europe and the USA. McComb was elected a Royal Academician in 1991 and he was made an Honorary Member of the Royal Watercolour Society and the Royal Society of Printmakers in 1996. He describes his work as visual abstractions after nature and is very interested in the detail of nature, declaring that everything he draws for him is a portrait; “If one person smiles when they see my work it is enough, my life has had a meaning and a shape”. He lives and works in London.
