Artwork description

This unique work by Andrea McLean was inspired by the 17th century writings of Thomas Traherne. Here, the artist depicts the magical idea of a gemstone orchard.

Originally a monoprint which McLean further developed with hand-coloured elements, the work was made at the artist’s Hereford studio. McLean is inspired by the visionary works of 17th century poet Thomas Traherne who believed the condition of ‘Felicitie’ could be regained through reflection.

During McLean's time living in Falmouth, the patterns and colours of coastal rocks informed the surface quality of her paintings. Her move to London sparked an interest in William Blake’s poetry as a way of navigating and mapping the city.

McLean has participated in London exhibitions, including at Art Space Gallery, the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, and the Jerwood Drawing Prize.
