George Stubbs ARA
Born in Liverpool, George Stubbs is regarded as the greatest horse painter in history. Having received little formal art training, he worked as an engraver and portrait painter in his early career. Stubbs held a fascination with anatomy and after travelling in Italy examining the work of the Renaissance masters and spending 18 months dissecting and drawing horses, in 1766 his ‘The Anatomy of a Horse’ was published. The book was lauded for its beauty and scientific accuracy and with its focus on anatomical detail it changed the world of equestrian art for ever.
