Dame Laura Knight was born in Derbyshire and attended Nottingham School of Art, where she met her husband, the artist Harold Knight. The two were to become central figures in the Newlyn School. Knight was the only female artist to be given war commissions in both the First and Second World Wars, and in 1946 was commissioned as the only British artist to cover the Nuremberg Trials.
