Diana Croft studied Illustration at Brighton University in the 1980s and has worked as a printmaker ever since, specialising in collographs and linocuts. Her influences include William Morris and Eric Ravilious.
Her linocut The Horse on the Hill depicts an imagined, stylised landscape inspired by the distinctive undulating hills of the South Downs not far from where Croft lives. She is interested on man's influence on the landscape and the myriad patterns that form on the fields from centuries of grazing, plouging and working the land. The horse is an embodiement of the human desire to create a lasting feature on the landscape and it provides an image of constancy throughout the changing seasons.
