Scottish painter and art teacher, Sir William George Gillies is widely regarded as one of Scotland's greatest 20th-century painters. Gillies graduated from the Edinburgh College of Art where he went on to teach for 40 years, serving as Head of Painting and then as Principal of the College from 1959 until his retirement in 1966. Gillies favourite subjects were still life and landscapes, especially views of Lothian, Fife and the Border regions of Scotland.
