Born in Surrey in 1913, Frederick Gore was the son of the artist Spencer Gore, who was President of the Camden Town Group. As a young man, Gore ostensibly studied classics at Trinity College, Oxford, but spent more time painting at the Ruskin School of Art. Upon leaving Oxford, he trained at the Westminster School of Art and then the Slade School of Fine Art. After serving in the army, he began teaching at Saint Martin's School of Art in 1946, where he became Head of Painting from 1951 until he retired in 1973 and was chairman of the Academy's Exhibition Committee for over a decade. He was awarded a CBE in 1987.
