Augustus John was a Welsh painter, draughtsman and etcher born in 1878. As a young man he attended the Slade School of Fine Art and later became known for his portraits. By the 1920's, he was Britain's foremost portrait painter, capturing the likeness of many of his contemporaries, including Dylan Thomas and W.B Yeats.
He exhibited frequently at the New English Art Club and was made a Royal Academician in 1928. He was admitted to the Order of Merit by King George VI in 1942.
