Created exclusively for the RA shop in collaboration with Lilian May, this matchbox sized watercolour set brings the RA Collection to life. Each hand mulled palette features colours carefully selected with our Collections team to correspond directly to key artworks in the RA Collection.
Each paint is handmade which means they can have cracks in the surface or small bubbles. Unlike factory made watercolours which are squeezed out the machinery in long solid rectangles and precisely cut and placed into their plastic pans, Lilian May hand pours each colour into its ceramic well. Handmade in Somerset from earthenware clay sourced in Stoke-on-Trent, every piece is finished with a glossy speckled glaze, making each set beautifully unique.

LILIAN MAY is a family business that brings the love of traditional craft back into the creation of artist supplies. Will, the founder, is a watercolour artist and ceramicist with a love of traditional crafts. Chris, his mother, and her sisters Noreen and Sue, join in creating the ceramic wares. Leo, Will's nephew, is an apprentice carpenter and helps weekends and evenings in the creation of their ceramic supplies and paint-making.
The small business is named after Will’s grandmother: "Lilian May, was the head and heart of our family and her love of family and also appreciation of quality workmanship, honestly made, is the ethos of our small family business."
