Artwork description

One of a series of collages using graphics from Commando War Stories in Pictures to tell new stories. David Mach RA grew up with these comics as a young boy in Scotland and they’re a major source material for his practice.

Collage is a key creative process for Mach. Within them he incorporates already known images, in the same way his celebrated assemblages include mass-produced found objects. The sculptor uses the ‘recognition factor’ of these artefacts to communicate his ideas to the viewer.

Mach is a former Turner Prize nominee, with many public commissions and international exhibitions to his name.

About David Mach RA

David Mach RA attended the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee from 1974 to 1979. Here, Mach decided to specialise in sculpture because he thought it was the most intellectually challenging and physically demanding practice.

Mach takes thousands of common items and transforms them to make each work -  a gorilla made from coat-hangers, the Parthenon from tyres, intricately collaged... Go to artist page
