Artwork description

Produced in 1978, Illuminated Fragments relates to a series of line drawings made by Nigel Hall in the late 1970s, using ‘almost symmetrical’ shapes. In these works, the total length of the fragmented lines adds up to the outer dimensions of the ‘whole’ shape. Pared-down and minimal, the image offers a sense of balance between activity and calm. Divisions are created within the picture plane, intersecting spaces and creating tension.

About Nigel Hall RA

Nigel Hall RA studied at the West of England College of Art, Bristol from 1960 to 1964 and at the Royal College of Art, London from 1964 to 1967. A Harkness Fellowship took him to the United States from 1967 to 1969.
