Artwork description

Best known for his etchings celebrating the dramatic coastline of the British Isles, this print is evidence of the diversity within Ackroyd’s practice as a printmaker. Characterised by atmospheric skies and turbulent seas, Ackroyd’s etchings are often begun during boat trips where he works from life, sketching directly onto a copper plate.

In his words, ‘Knockando House, built in the 1740s, sits high on the plateau overlooking the River Spey in Morayshire, Scotland. In the valley below is the attendant Knockando distillery, and several Spey salmon pools. The hills around are a wild and natural environment, supporting many species, especially deer and birdlife.’
