Half a Self-Portrait

Half a Self-Portrait
Face Coverings

In collaboration with Ron Arad RA and invited Royal Academicians, we have developed five unique face coverings, featuring artworks by the artists. Exclusive to the RA Shop, these face coverings are a fresh take on self-portraiture!

Self-portraiture has always been a balance between representing and imagining oneself but in this project the invited artists were only given half a face to respond to. The resulting creations are playful and full of personailty.

Shop the collection and find out what inspired the artists below. We look forward to seeing (half of) you on your next visit to the Royal Academy!

Klein Blue?

"A friend recently sent me some Klein blue paint. First thing I did with it was smear it on my face, then took a mask and stamped it to get an imprint. This is it!
I'm sure Yves Klein would be very happy with it."

- Ron Arad RA

"I am rather a shy and misanthropic person. My ‘Hello' mask helps stop dispersal of the virus and replaces pointless greetings. After the virus fades from memory, I hope my ‘Hello’ masks continue to be worn as a way of avoiding unnecessary conversation."

- Bob and Roberta Smith RA

"During lockdown I did a series of drawings on Japanese paper - the design for the mask developed out of these and I wanted it to be bold!"

- Rebecca Salter PRA

Little wonder...

"The pandemic has sometimes felt like a car out of control, the government lurching this way and that. Little wonder we turn to books, music, pictures, films and TV to gauge our feelings and measure the world."

- Humphrey Ocean RA

Upbeat 1

"[For this mask} I focused on the idea of the hidden mouth… the smile, ironically at a slant that cannot be seen… we ‘read’ people by their eyes but the animation of the mouth is often very telling as a facial gesture."

- Vanessa Jackson RA
