Lilac Ai Weiwei Hand-Painted Limited Edition Hardback Catalogue
by Ai Weiwei Hon RA
Published to coincide with his major exhibition at the Royal Academy, this book explores the multidisciplinary work of Ai Weiwei Hon RA in texts by Tim Marlow, John Hancock and Daniel Rosbottom.
For this special edition, Ai Weiwei hand-painted hardback dust jackets in a selection of ten colours. Produced in a limited number of 110, each dust jacket is signed and numbered by the artist, and presented on the book in a clothbound clamshell box.
On each cover, a bold, calligraphic stroke sweeps across the paper to produce a painting of great vibrancy and spontaneity in celebration of the tactile qualities of the medium. Using a fully loaded brush, he allowed the paint to run and dribble down the paper under its own weight, producing works with an affinity to his Coloured Vases, which he creates by dipping antique Chinese ceramics into the same type of brightly coloured paint and allowing it to flow downwards.
Signed and hand painted by Ai Weiwei Hon RA, the bold stroke of paint used on this lilac dust jacket is reminiscent of Ai Weiwei's Coloured Vases. Antique Chinese pots were dipped into coloured paint which was then allowed to flow down each vessel, much like the paint he has used here has dripped on the page.
An artist and activist, Ai Weiwei was born in 1957. From architecture to installations, social media to documentaries, Ai uses a wide range of mediums as expressions to set up new possibilities and conditions for his audience to examine society and its values.
Ai Weiwei was elected an Honorary Royal Academician in 2011. He lives and works in Beijing, China.
