Product story

Mark Rothko dedicated the last two decades of his life to creating his celebrated ‘colour field’ paintings. These iconic works of the 1950s and ’60s epitomise his mission to convey powerful human emotions through abstract means – as he once memorably put it, ‘tragedy, ecstasy, doom’.

Building up layer upon layer of thinned paint into apparently simple compositions, Rothko created shimmering mirages of colour that are left open to myriad interpretations and inspire a direct emotional reaction. Rothko’s desire was for his works to have the same emotive power that he found in classical music.
