This book accompanied the 2016 exhibition Matisse in His Time: Masterworks of Modernism from the Centre Pompidou, Paris held by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, curated by Cécile Debray.

The exhibition included paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints by Matisse from the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries with 50 iconic works by the most celebrated artists of the twentieth century, such as Picasso, Renoir, Derain, Braque, Miró, and Modigliani.
