Artwork description

Best known for his etchings celebrating the dramatic coastline of the British Isles, this print by Norman Ackroyd is evidence of the diversity within his practice as a printmaker. Characterised by atmospheric skies and turbulent seas, Ackroyd’s etchings are often begun during boat trips where he works from life, sketching directly onto a copper plate.

Oranmore Castle is a massive fourteenth-century defensive tower built on the strategic inner reach of Galway Bay. Over the past three decades, Ackroyd has been a regular visitor to Oranmore and has stayed in the room he depicts in this print. High up in the ancient tower it has views over the Burren and Galway Bay.
