Product story

John Anthony Park
Snow Falls on Exmoor, 1939
Oil on canvas, 63.5 x 76.2 cm

John Anthony Park (1878-1962) was born in Preston. His father involved him in his painting and decorating business and as a young man he moved to St Ives. He was fortunate to meet Julius Olsson and Algernon Talmage who taught him at the St Ives School of Painting. He had work accepted by the Royal Academy of Arts in 1905 and was encouraged to move to Paris to study at the Académie Colarossi. He spent many years travelling between England and France until he married Peggy and settled back in St Ives. This work Snow Falls on Exmoor was bought for the Tate Gallery in 140 – much of his work of this period now adorns public collections. He wrote ‘Colour is everything. Anyone can be taught line, but you cannot teach a feeling for colour.’
