Philip Matthews was a painter and teacher born in Belfast. Matthews attended Maidenhead School of Art where his tutors included Bernard Casson, and at the Euston Road School studying under Victor Pasmore and William Coldstream, 1938-39. A conscientious objector in World War II he worked on the land and developed his landscape painting. In 1946 he joined the staff at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and eventually became Head at the Fine Art Department. He exhibited at Wakefield Art Gallery in the important Euston Road School exhibition of 1948 and also showed at the Royal Academy, London Group, and New English Art Club. Examples of his work are in the collections of Arts Council England, Government Art Collection, Royal Academy, and the Royal West of England Academy.
