Artwork description

Senior Academician Fred Cuming RA’s work is characterised by his exploration of dramatic light and shadow within the natural landscape. Much of his work celebrates Southern English coastlines including the sea and skies of Hastings and Rye often illuminated by dawn, dusk or glowing moonlight. However, Cuming also paints with an imaginative breadth that has taken his practice further afield to the natural and urban landscapes of Italy and beyond. Reflecting upon the presence of man and society within the nature, Cuming continues to work with passion and energy into his 80s and has produced a number of new paintings for this exhibition that are being shown for the first time.

The figure looming in this midsummer scene appears at once to be moving toward, and away, from the viewer: who is she? The hint in the title towards a genus of trees and shrubs bearing apricots and nectarines also evokes a spirit of abundance.
