Bob and Roberta Smith: The Secret to a Good Life, Special Edition
This warm and witty family story from Bob and Roberta Smith RA, told in his signature signwriting style, explores the role of women artists, the sexism of the art world and the benefits of drawing every day.
This special edition is accompanied by two wonderful limited works; a Bob and Roberta Smith lithograph The Secret to a Good Life, as well as a risograph zine exploring the life of Mary Moser RA by Deirdre’s granddaughter, the artist Etta Voorsanger-Brill.
Published as an edition of250, both pieces are signed and numbered by their respective artists.
Bob and Roberta Smith’s parents were artists. Each year, they submitted work to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and waited nervously to see if they’d be accepted. Triumph or disaster accompanied the result. Then, Bob and Roberta’s mother, the painter Deirdre Borlase, discovered that she was more likely to be accepted if she disguised her gender, signing her paintings ‘D. Borlase’.
