The Danish insurance magnate Wilhelm Hansen’s collection is a treasure trove of French art. In this catalogue discover masterpieces by Gauguin, Monet, Manet, Morisot, Renoir and others, with two fascinating essays exploring the themes of the exhibition.
The Gauguin and the Impressionists exhibition is being held in the Royal Academy of Arts from 7th August — 18th October 2020.
This 144-page hardback catalogue was published to accompany the exhibition ‘Gauguin and the Impressionists: Masterpieces from the Ordrupgaard Collection’ at the Royal Academy of Arts, 29 March – 14 June 2020.
The book illustrates 60 works from the Ordrupgaard Collection in Copenhagen, which represent the very best of French painting from Ingres to Matisse. Essays by expert authors expand on the themes of the exhibition:
- Anne-Birgitte Fonsmark, Director of Ordrupgaard, on the making of the collection and its home at Ordrupgaard
- Anna Ferrari, curator at the Royal Academy, on the political and social context of Hansen’s collecting during the First World War
Detailed catalogue information is also provided for each work.
